The former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) late Sir John was born Kojo Afriyie in the Ashanti Region of Ghana where he attended the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in Bekwai.
Sir John obtained his GCE Ordinary level certificate. He then proceeded to obtain his GCE Advanced level certificate from Konongo Odumase Secondary School in Konongo also in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
Sir John was admitted to study political science at the University of Ghana, Legon. He then enrolled at the Ghana School of Law where he graduated with Bachelor of Law. After this, he was admitted as a solicitor and counsel for the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Sir John begun private law practice in the year 1981. During the John Agyekum Kufour administration, he was appointed head of legal services at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.
He was later made to act as the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the corporation. While managing his firm, Afriyie was also actively engaged in Ghanaian politics. He served as the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party from 2010 to 2014.
In Ghana’s political space, Sir John is mostly remembered for his head on (no retreat, no surrender) attitude with the opposition NDC. He was often called upon by most journalist both in the print and audio-visual media for cosultancy on critical issues of national development. During his active political days, he often dialogued withh Hon. Johnson Aseidu Nketia of the NDC (popularly known as General Mosquito).
He lost his bid to secure a second term as the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to Kwabena Agyapong.Mr Afriyie until his demise served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission.
Sir John is fondly remembered for his utterances during the supreme court ruling on the 2012 elections.
